The point of these opening verses in Romans 5 is to demonstrate that Christians are saved in their ungodly state, not because or after they clean up their act. This is the supreme demonstration of God's love for us. A love so deep it is unfathomable, a love we must live in light of if we are to experience the joy and rejoicing which comes from being a Christian.
