Jesus' suffering was in our place and for our sake.  How did he suffer?  Certainly on the cross, but in this passage we see he suffered through his silence at his trial and his mistreatment and torture prior to the cross.  Jesus saves us through his strength in enduring these things.  He endured them because of his love for us and by looking at his suffering closely we grow in our love for him because of all he has done for us.
