Continuing through the Gospel of Mark, everything that precedes this passages converges in these four verses.  This passage is the watershed moment for the gospel of Mark, where Jesus is identified by Peter as Christ, or the Messiah.  Just as Jesus challenged his disciples with the question of his identity along the way, so we are challenged at ordinary and sometimes inopportune moments.  We are also challenged by our pluralistic culture to proclaim Christ as the only way of salvation.  Then we are challenged to make Jesus known for who he truly is.
