This healing of the blind man takes place in two stages.  This two stage process is unique in the gospels and shows us that Jesus loves the hard cases.  Jesus will continue until our faith is complete (see Philippians 1:6).  Jesus completes our faith by leading us and by restoring us.  Just as Jesus can heal a blind man, he can heal our spiritual blindness.
